Be prepared for the possibility of them being seasick...

Re: Tips for cruising with a one-year-old?

We always assigned one person to the baby. That person had no other job and would never be asked to help with anything.

For couples, that means you are single handing. Make sure you can, in all conditions. Docking, storm, fire, everything. Just do it. Don't see your wife and ask for help. If you are watching the kid, same thing. The person watching the kid has a full-time job they cannot be distracted from.

That sounds extreme, and certainly there are minor exceptions (kid is asleep in the cabin), but the singlehander mentality will keep you organized and prevent panic/mistakes. That is really when I learned singlehanding.

This is really good advice and I will take this mental approach, thank you.

No, my boat was formerly "Fred Wade Jones" and "Madeline" but it's been "Kalliope" since 2013. (Orange Crush was the name of my first boat)

I've seen a few Shannon 38s in my travels but mine is the only pilothouse I've seen in person.
