US couple buying catamaran in Turkey and traveling around with our dog

Hi, we are a couple from the US. We are buying a cat in Turkey in the coming months and plan to fly out with our dog a month or so in advance to sightsee our way around Europe on our way there. We will remain in Turkey for the winter and then start sailing towards Greece. If any of you are or have been in similar situations (travel with dogs, travel through Europe, transportation, buying boats in Turkey, living aboard in Turkey, etc), please connect with me so we can share info.

Re: US couple buying catamaran in Turkey and traveling around with our dog

Going from Turkey to the EU the dog will need to have a test to ensure the dog has sufficient rabies antibodies. He can't travel until 3 months from the date of test and if he fails the first time it will take a lot more time. There is no waiting period if the test is taken in EU and documented in an EU pet passport.
The marinas in Turkey are very busy from what I hear and I would book a marina today if that's not already been done.

It will need rabies shots tests certification. Plus EU animal health declaration as Turkey is on the Eu list of high rabies incidence

May need Tapeworm shots

Microchipped

EU pet passport documentation if you wish to travel within the EU

Note the rabies shoot and the titration test must take place after the microchip was inserted and documented

US citizens require a Turkish E-visa which gives then 90 days in Turkey. To stay longer you’ll need a 6 month residence visa

The EU Schengen area is 90 days out of 180 so you’ll need to plan how you plan to move around so as not to overstay

Nomad visas are for people working in one country to work in another. Fir for an eu citizen since there are no restrictions anyway , it’s not useful.

We will be going to France first to visit family and plan to get an EU pet passport then.
We are good at the marina until the current owner’s marina slip contract expires about 2-3 months after we buy the boat. We will contact the marina to make sure we can keep the slip for a few more months if we need to. Great info! Thank you very much!

Re: US couple buying catamaran in Turkey and traveling around with our dog

Thanks for the info. She was microchipped over a year ago. We will be going to France first to visit family and plan to get an EU pet passport before going to Turkey. We would like to stay in Turkey around 90 days and then begin to travel to Greece and go west from there. We’d like to stay in the med for about a year before returning to the states. When we go back into Europe, we can just re-enter with the same EU pet passport? Will we need anything returning to the EU after 90 days in Turkey? Thank you very much!

Great info! I will look into the evisa to see what the requirements are and how long it takes to obtain it so as to be ready before we leave for Europe.

We plan to go to France first for a week or two before Turkey. We then plan to stay in turkey around 90 days.

We then plan to go to Greece and travel around the med for a year going towards Spain and eventually sail back to the US after about a year.

You will need to get the dog sorted out in the US then. ISO compatible microchip , I don’t think the US is classified as a high rabies country but if you go to Turkey to get back into the EU the dog will need a rabies titration test and 3 months delay

You need to plan this carefully to avoid visa or overstay issues especially with the dog

Before you leave you must ensure that your dog has all the paperwork etc to re enter the US or you may not be able to bring the dog into the US.
