It is my understanding that Patrick Childress (RIP) had a substantial amount of nautical experience and he modified his Catalina 27 specifically to cross oceans. My opinion: if you have enough knowledge/experience to attempt an ocean crossing, you will also have a good sense of the suitability of your boat of choice for that task. Best wishes.

Your boat would most likely be fine for a circumnavigation if it's in good condition.

The question is though are you up to the task?

Several Contessa 26's have circumnavigated or crossed oceans as well as have a few Bristol 27's and these boats are only slightly stronger built than a Morgan 28.

****You might start with a sail to the Dry Tortugas and see how that goes before jumping off on a circumnav.

Better yet how about a sail over to Ship Island......or Horn Island for a shakedown.

I sailed my I17R out to both of those Islands back in the early 2000's several times.

Which is amazing since they are so lightly built.

But since they made over 3,000 of them maybe that it why.

They were so available.

i feel i have the knowledge. only thing i would need would be a wind vane. which new would be more than the cost of my boat.

i guess my intention with this thread was to see if anyone thinks the catalina 27 is in some sense a superior vessel in comparison to my boat.

id love to get a boat more suited for heavy weather but it might just be easier and cheaper to just go with what i already got

funny enough i am headed to dry tortugas this thursday! ill look up ship and horn island never heard of those.

in what ways would you say a contessa 26 or bristol 27 are more strongly built than a morgan? the hulls are full keels and slightly heavier with deeper draft.

my question is in what way is the morgan 28 not up to the task?
