Does any of the readers know where to find the DATE and HULL numbers for a MORGAN 28 that I just acquired?

Re: Morgan 28

HIN’s are usually near the transom on the starboard side or on the transom/stern.

The date is part of the Hull Identification Number (HIN)

Re: Morgan 28

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to turn to find a replacement tiller for a MORGAN 28? I just noticed how weak the one on ‘SeaWolfe” is and for safety sake I should get a replacement. Your thoughts?

Re: Morgan 28

I realize this boat is over (50) years old and finding one sitting around in someone’s garage via slim, I would possibly entertain having a new one made. I still have the original if that helps.

Say Tom …. Any suggestion on where to go to find a tiller for my MORGAN 28? I still have the original but it was terribly uncared for and seems weak.

Here is one source below. West Marine, Defender, Jamestown...all can probably get you one either by boat name/model or basic dimensions.

Never bought from them, always made my own.

Morgan 28 Laminated Mahogany and Ash Tiller
Brand: Rudder Craft
Product Code: StyleSJ

Re: Morgan 28

Thank you SPOT. This looks like terrific information for ‘Mr Wonderful’. I’d like to fancy myself as a Mr Fixit but to have the tiller not look chumpy, I’m probably better off ordering one. Since my ‘SeaWolfe’ is a stock boat, do I really need to provide measurements? I don’t really know what measurements they’re gonna need. Your thoughts?

Re: Morgan 28

Rocky, Ruddercraft's words, not mine:

"The butt end dimensions are 2.25"H X 1.87"W with and 38" overall length. Some customers have chosen a style "D" with 3.5" rise. Butt end & handle are parallel. The "SJ" style is more alike the original equipment shape. Please chose the desired shape from the drop down menu.

We strongly suggest that you make sure these dimensions fit your boat before ordering"

I would rather confirm before ordering than to have to pay shipping to return something for a poor fit. Knowing the basic dimensions may also allow you to get one locally that works that is not specifically listed for a Morgan 28.

Anytime Tiller is another place.

https://anytiller.com/

I lucked out and found one on Ebay with matching holes already drilled a few years ago for $75.00

My quest for finding a replacement tiller was an adventure. Started at a salvage yard …. nothing! Moved over to WEST MARINE and they had (4) but they all looked like zebras. I’d gotten an email reply from RUDDERCRAFT and that’s where I hit the J’pot. Brian gave me photos, dimensions and selections and when I’d made my choice he helped me a bunch on pricing by finding one that was custom made, comp finished and was shipping it out today! Talk about a happy dance!!!

Re: Morgan 28

Forty years ago, I made an emergency tiller, from a hickory axe handle (<$10). Spent about a half hour “carving” it to fit.
A friend made a Rudder Post Head Fitting, which I fitted to the spare tiller (free).

I think Sean D'E sailed his Bristol 27 most of the way around the world with his homemade tiller.

See photos.

Also pictured is the motor and PVC pipe that powers his Pypilot Autopilot of his own construction.

Plus video of Pypilot testing
