Teak Restoration: A Labor Of Love
So...on to the interior. I stripped all of the teak....Dummy me...I didn't take before pictures....Just picture blackish brown teak with 28 years of dirt and teak oil mixture...okay...time to strip her down butt naked...Chad...painter of boats says the best way to strip teak down is a mixture of....1 gallon very hot water mixed with 1 quart of sudsy ammonia and 1 cup of granular Tide laundry detergent...scrub in in with a scrub brush and then rinse it clean...He says you can use those Teak products that strip it away quickly but then it will raise the grain of the teak which will then require sanding. He also says those products are very caustic and you must be very careful not to get them on anything else.....so Im with Chad...I'll do it his way....One thing though....its been raining nonstop daily here for the past two weeks.....what a pain.....working with ammonia in the cabin of a sailboat requires ventilation!
