there is a poll "living your dream" or some such thing that basically asks why people haven't....mine is to ask where they are in achieving it. Odd jobs mainly, working on other peoples boats here and there and similar terrestrial jobs. My friend spends about 6 months out of the year sailing and the rest going to college and saving up to sail...his annual cruising budget is about $2500

Thanks: I am going to see how I feel after the next few days on the boat. I am already living the dream next to the beach, but the location has got stale after 20 + years. Usually when I get on the boat I don’t want to get off and it would really make living affordable. I would be interested to hear what kind of work your friends have found?

How's this: Many of us have dreamed of cutting our land ties and just sailing off into the sunset. Some of us instantly pulled themselves back out of their day dream realizing they would have to give up their corner office, condo etc.....some of us just figured it could never happened so it was just their own personal dream that helped carry them through the rigors of life, some of us are actually preparing for it right now , some tried it and were reluctantly drawn back, some realized it is not the life for them and a few are actually living it.
My purpose here is to help those who feel it is beyond their grasp to take a closer look and maybe realize their dream is actually alot closer to reality than they thought. I have known people that may cook on a camp stove, carry their water in jerry cans, basically live bare bones survival......but it is on their boat cruising the south pacific supporting themselves on odd jobs....but they are actually doing it.

Opps, yes your poll sounds like a great idea. All I would do is in the first option make it a bit clearer what the question is i.e. [1] went cruising (forced to give it up) etc?

I wanted to start a poll on the forum and don't know how to go about it and would like your input. Some of us have thought it through, talked to others that have and have an idea of it's feasibility. Some of us it has been a dream in the back of their heads and they never realized how possible it really is. I have the boat I have an income (albeit modest) and it is something my father wanted to do all his life so I grew up hearing about it.

On your scale I fit in anywhere from 1 – 5

([1] Did it (forced to give it up) [2] did it (chose to give it up [3] doing it [4] getting ready too [5] has been a long standing dream).

The big problem is that I have been taking a break and am finally getting behind in the bills. So I am might be about to become premanently [3]!

I was wondering if you could help me with a poll. Basically severing land ties and sailing off into the tropical sunset. [1] Did it (forced to give it up) [2] did it (chose to give it up [3] doing it [4] getting ready too [5] has been a long standing dream [6] I prefer my corner office, condo and a boat for an vacation.
Hopefully this will help those that are on the verge of doing it get a better idea if it is possible and/or what they want
