Outboard mount and hoist
Believe me, I know an outboard hanging on the transom is NOT attractive, BUT in my case the boat was built without accommodation for an inboard. And when the outboard is up out of the water, (and I have no interior fuel smell or bilge issues or engine-related through-hulls) the beauty of the set-up is more easily appreciated!
Cables set the depth. "StarBoard" transom.
9.8 hp with power prop. Plenty of power, 5.8 knots at about 1/2 power, 8 mpg.
Weighing anchor in Little Scorpion anchorage.
Hoist
A little under 5 kts at about 3/4 throttle with the 8hp 2-stroke. About 5mpg.
Smooth hull, no inboard.
If you can ignore the need for a new paint job, the geometry of the hoist is very good and it is stronger than it looks. The PO being an engineer did...
That little 25 year-old 2-stroke 8hp power prop has pushed me quite a few miles like that! Still has good compression too!
I need better shots but here you can see how the geometry of the arms drops it to the right level. A cable within the mount stops it at the right...
Being able to raise or lower the engine easily in 2 seconds without having to reach over the rail makes this set-up better than most.
Hoisted, from the pushpit rail, with an old mainsheet block. Easy. Daily rations stored close by.
Long shaft but prop clears the water. Now HERE is the only real fly in the ointment: dinghies, kayaks etc. will bang against the prop, or get caught...
