Picture 29 of 58 from Album Album #3 A photobiography
21a. 2001, electric motor for my Southern Cross 28. Simple design with an Etec brushless motor and some aluminum channel. I fitted it with 48Vdc, but wished I had done 36Vdc, because at that time ready available, economic recreation boat electronics only went to 36V. Gel Batteries are the way to go. My purpose for using the motor are 1. in the marina. 2. motorsailing against wind and current. 3. Making time motorsailing when necessary. OK, my point is, using my Honda 2000 with a volt meter and watching my battery bank with a separate voltmeter, I could motorsail at hull speed across the Gulf of Mexico without using my batteries and still be charging my batteries, using a gallon of fuel every 10 to 16 hours. I know that was a mouthful, but I'm just mentioning that with the sails up, the boat usually does not need much more power to achieve hull speed. With the sails down, it is a whole different story. Also my Honda has its own Stainless exhaust system thru the bilge 1-1/2" bronze thru hull. The three bilge systems, (one manual, two electric) have back check valves to insure all systems flow outward. My Rob Roy 23 is only 23 feet long. Please remember "The smaller the boat, the faster they sink."
