Picture 18 of 22 from Album Dreadnought 32 Ketches, Cutters and Sloops
Original rudder. The large size helps w manuverability and I believe improves downwind steering but it also makes for a very "heavy" tiller. At least two world girdlers, including Harry Heckel(Idle Queen) modified them, trimming from the aft end and adding to the forward part where there is space in the prop arperature. This balances the rudder of course and it takes a lot of the work out of steering. It also provides a way to install a trim-tab.
John Olson who has a Dread up in Sausalito speculates that the divits on the aft end of the rudder are there to help climbing back aboard the boat.
