Hi there. Yes packing up and getting ready to move somewhere is always hectic. Port Clements is a favorite stop over point for kayakers so I should imagine she will find plenty of support. I do get to Port Clements once in a while and it would be fun to ring her up sometime when I am there. I will add her to my contact list on messenger so hopefully we can exchange some ideas and such.

Hi Astrid, things have been very hectic here . Jen is packing for her trip to Port Clements going through what she thinks she will need for a year. Hope she likes it, she wants to learn to Kayak more she has done a little of it. She is very excited for the adventure. She is outdoorsy and loves to dance,shop, movies, go for a coffee so I hope there is something there . She is going to be watching 2 small girls so will not have that much free time.

Ahhhhh, makeup. Well I don't very often get to wear makeup around here, and a good many girls here don't either on a regular basis. About the only time is if I am dating or going out to a fancy place (which would normally mean going up to Port Clements or across Hecate to Prince Rupert). Otherwise, I don't bother much. If she knows how to handle a kayak, the islands are popular with the kayak crowd.

Hi, I hope she does I think she is prepared and knows she is excited and wants to go. If she does not like it she can always leave. But she is really into the outdoors and is not really afraid of the cold...she does like the sun. But has lived in the midwest and West Va on a mountain so knows about the rain and dreary days. But it looks beautiful there. I was afraid there would be nothing there for her to do. But she will be happy with chinese food at least. She is going to bring a lot of shampoo and conditioner and basic things enough for at least 6 months. Thinking that things are more expensive or she may not be able to get the same things there. And her make up! We must not forget that...she is worried about that.

I hope she knows what she is getting into as far as weather goes. Up where she will be, the conditions are sub-arctic, but still relatively moderate because of the warm current. Rainfall is an average of about 50-inches per year; cloud cover and fog is frequent and one is often lucky to have 4 hours of sunshine per day.

Temperatures range from (if I have done the conversion right) from high 50s to low 60s during the day in the summer, to high 30s to low 40s during winter daylight hours. Even at night in the winter, temps rarely dip below freezing, although it is known to happen (this year for instance has been cooler than expected or typical).

Masset is up north of Port Clements at the entrance to Masset Inlet. It's a nice area and historic. The weather is generally pretty wet. She should have a good selection of cold weather clothes and rain gear. The temps here are relatively mild, considering how far north it is. The Japan current keeps water temps moderate and we get some snow, but mostly rain. She will probably have missed most of the really bad storms by the time she gets here as after January the temperature starts to climb again, peaking in mid summer.


As far as food goes, Port Clements has a top notch tourist lodge and dining. There is also Haida Rose Cafe which is cozy, and Mile Zero Pub and Cafe. Pearl's dining room has some decent Chinese food at reasonably low prices. Delma's Co-op would probably be where she will do most of her grocery shopping. I think there is a place called Seapak which deals in canned and fresh seafood in Masset too.

Greetings. I do spend some time in Haida Gwaii. I wintered there last year and this one. I normally work out of Prince Rupert over on the mainland, but I really like QC. Where abouts will you daughter be living? If she is in one of the main villages, Masset, Queen Charlotte City, Port Clements, Skidgate, or Sandspit she should not have any problems with groceries or going out to eat. There are a number of nice places including a pizzaria even. Entertainment is a little sparse though, but hiking and exploring are great if one is outdoorsy. The islands have quite a large bear population, so it is a good idea to keep ones eyes open; there have not been any attacks that I am aware of, but it is a good idea to be cautious nonetheless. If I might ask, what is she going to be doing in the Charlottes?
