I use it as a steadying sail, and to keep the bow into the wind at anchor, extra drive off wind, and to balance the rig with a reefed Genoa, etc. Never tried it for self steering as I have an autohelm, but the boat balances nicely with the mizzen up and tracks well. don't think it would steer the boat unattended for very long. It's a small sail, much smaller than on a ketch.
