    Biography
When I was a wee sprite I spent my days, when I stayed with my dad, as a harbour rat. I was a weekend warrior of the sort, as I was only with him on weekends. Usually the time was spent following him around and trying to be a good little assistant as he built the empire that is now West Marine. We were in and out of boat yards, boat shows, & stopping at every boat shop we came across to "check prices"... constantly staying ahead of competition.
Wednesday night "Beer can races" began with being picked up in Sunnyvale after school and driving through horrible traffic over hwy 17 to arrive into Santa Cruz harbor and hop on first Blew, then Redline, then ProMotion; built and used as a test boat for all of West Marine's gear.
Well... the bug got me. I dreamt, while I was studying art in University, to buy a slow boat, a Chinese junk... something big and slow, and build a glass blowing studio on her and travel the seas selling my wares at each port to be able to move on.
The sailors life for me... that dream never left, just took a new shape. Now it's taken form in this beauty. She's a classic Irish trawler built by BIM, Bord Iascaigh Mhara (Irish Sea Fisheries Board) from 60 years ago to now. The Ros Beithe being built in 1964. She's got classic lines and is in remarkably good shape. The man who owned her the longest, on Achill Island on the west coast of County Mayo in Ireland, seems to have taken very good care of her. I'm to meet him some time in the next while... looking forward to his stories. I've just bought her off Pat Conneely, a Roundstone, Ireland local. A great Irish gent, who began the process of converting her to a leisure boat, tidying cabins and keeping her in good shape.
So, the next great adventure begins!
