    Biography
The handle is from surfing many summers in Southern California.

I've sailed off and on for most of my life. At age 8, I bought an Sabot and raced it on Alamitos Bay (Long Beach, Ca.) At 12 I built a boat from magazine plans with help from my father. Then, at 17 I got a Penguin and sailed it on Santa Monica Bay while I was in college.

After a dry spell, I got a Thunderbird and raced actively on Santa Monica Bay for 10 years. Then I moved to Seattle and fulfilled a lifelong dream of crewing on a square rigger. I was rated topman aboard the Lady Washington (Gray's harbor, Washington) and crewed for 8 mo down the coast to San Diego, stopping along the way for presentations to elementary and middle schools and for gun battles with the Hawaiian Chieftain (lots of smoke and fire.)

After that, I got a Petersen 36 and cruised Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.

Boatless now for 12 years, I've taught sailing and skippered public sails at the Center for Wooden boats in Seattle. CWB is a living museum, where small old and replica wooden boats are available for rent. On Sundays, the public is welcome for short free sails on Lake Union.

Besides the highly regarded sailing school, they teach boat maintenance, boat building, operation of steam engines, and bronze casting, and a lot of other stuff.

Now I'm in Lousiana helping a friend prepare a Down Easter 38 for cruising in the Carribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
