Dear Tom,

I will be in Sag Harbor every Friday + weekends thru October 31. Buying your first boat is a big deal. Great that you've looked at quite a few boats and done research. I bought my LeComte NE 38 21 years ago and love it, had great times/wonderful sailing adventures. The classic question of how big/how small comes down to a personal decision and combination of factors. Budget, but not just budget, so comfort, seaworthiness, cabin layout, sailing agenda, frequency of guests, need for privacy, aesthetic qualities, ongoing maintenance, etc. Important to buy a boat you love/are excited to look at each time you approach it or leave it in dinghy. Life's too short to own/sail or live on ugly boat. Sailing/cruising should be an aesthetic experience as much as any other aspect, e.g., sense of freedom, connection to nature, in tune w/elements, on the water, traveling to new places & meeting new people.
