Re: Information wanted for Kaufman 47

No personal experience but notable sailing author John Kretschmer owns one.

From his website: John Kretschmer Sailing - Bluewater Boats

Kaufman 47 - Any of you who know me or read my stuff know that Quetzal, my much loved boat, is a Kaufman 47. I have sailed her 66,000 miles in the last six years including four transatlantic passages. We've sailed the length and breath of the Med several times, around the Caribbean, and north to Newfoundland. The boat sails brilliantly. We've averaged 150 miles a day through it all, and don't motor much. Mike Kaufman's hull shape is a cross between a Beneteau 456 and a Hylas 49. I have always loved the low slung, powerful look of Kaufman and Ladd designs. Think of the Skye 51 and the Albin Nimbus as other examples. The Kaufman 47 is well balanced making it easy on the autopilot and also sails great with just a headsail, an effortless way to cross oceans. The hull has endured a pounding, including a punch on the chin from a nasty Italian tornado. We've ridden out three major deep-sea gales, major as in force 9 and 10 major. Oh yes, Quetzal has her quirks, but what boat doesn't. The Kaufman 49 is the same boat with a reverse transom. And there's no denying it that the Kaufman 47 was inspired by the S&S Swan 47. Side by side they're hard to tell apart. One way is the cockpit, the Kaufman's is much more comfortable.

Re: Information wanted for Kaufman 47

3 year thread bump...

I've done a lot of research on these & am seriously looking at a 1982 for sale here in SD. I've reached out to John K, and it looks like the OP ended up buying one & sailing around the world! (S.V.TAIPAN: TAIPAN)

This would be for 1-2 months/yr of west coast summer cruising with a young family of 5 and somewhat frequent guests, possibly going further afield as we continue to gain experience. And lots of daysailing during the rest of the year.

Seems like a good blend of seaworthiness, speed, and space at a reasonable price. No need for lots of luxuries, but do appreciate waterline and displacement in the Pacific swell.

Comments welcome!

Hello Junglebike
Have you inspected the Kaufman in SD? If so what did you think?

Re: Information wanted for Kaufman 47

This boat in SD has been for sale for several years now with some serious interest being expressed by various people online. It would be great if someone who has looked at it would comment on the issues, because there must be something.

And there seems to be a discrepancy with some of the listed stats. SailboatData.com shows the boat first being built in 1986 with a displacement of 30,000 lbs. The YW listing states that it is a 1982 boat with a displacement of 38000 lbs. SailboatData.com isn't always right and brokers often make mistakes in listings, but 3 years is a long time for a broker to not catch an error and SD.com is constantly updating.

Anybody have new info on this boat?

Re: Information wanted for Kaufman 47

Kaufman's were built in the Kha Shing boatyard in Taiwan. From what I have found, they were all pretty much custom. I recall that Michael Kaufman told me that 28 were built. Many went into charter. We have the center board version. Our boat came to south Florida from Annapolis and was previously known as "Begorrah". Now renamed Imagine, built like a tank, sails like a dream.

Re: Information wanted for Kaufman 47

Hello Michael - seeing you have a Kaufman 47, I have sailed with John Kretschmer and am looking for a boat (specifically a Kaufman 47 or 49). Any chance you are considering selling your vessel? If so I’m interested. I am in St. Augustine and close to Pompano. You can contact me at rbalch1127@gmail.com or text at 904-217-9977
Thanks for your response.

Re: Information wanted for Kaufman 47

If anyone in this group has info on the Kaufman 47 that was for sale in San Diego / or any other 47 or 49 for sale - I’m seriously looking to purchase one.

The San Diego Kaufman was taken off the market for some reason.

I have attempted to locate the broker and owner to no avail. Anyone having any info on any of these fronts, would be appreciated.

Re: Information wanted for Kaufman 47

I know there was a Kaufman 49 in Fort Lauderdale for sale about six months ago, but I didn't follow its outcome. Good luck. Kaufman's are as rare as hens teeth. You'll be fortunate to find one available.

We've owned our Kaufman 47 for 20 years and have just put her on the market-- it's bittersweet!
Here is the listing for her if you're looking for photos/specs (or if you're interested!):
