Pearson 40 Sinks in SF Bay While Singlehanded

The story is, today….

A Pearson 40 was being singlehanded in San Francisco Bay.

It started taking on water and the sailor called the USCG for help. They rescued him quickly. Just off Treasure Island.

When the water is up to the spreaders? I think that qualifies as "sunken boat."

That does not mean it cannot be recovered. Or it may be resting on the bottom, etc.

But, when the cabin top is covered or the hull is full of water? I call that "sunken."

I didn't see where the boat was sunken to its spreaders. I think the photo is misleading because of the high wave action.

The photo was taking looking west toward Berkeley, in the slot, on the west side of the central SF bay, just north east of treasure island. It's not in the ocean, but in the central bay. Waves were 3 feet at most in that area. You can actually see the water at the leach of the mainsail, that is not a wave. The boat sank and it will be refloated and moved.

If I were sinking in that area, I'd get as close as possible to Treasure Island too. Some nice shallow water around there.

I heard that the Coastguard got a distress call via the DSC button.

Here's a good time again to remind people to hook DSC radios up to the GPS, and program in the MMSI number.

I heard that the boat was being sailed Mon evening by a broker back from a pre-purchase survey. Rumor is that a large crack opened where the centerboard trunk meets the hull resulting in a massive leak that overwhelmed the bilge pump, resulting in it sinking to the bottom. Note, the bay is quite shallow there.
