Yikes! I was at Pearson when the first hulls were done. What’s you hull number?
Terrific boats. Like the battery bunny...they keep going and going.
They will never let you down at sea. Worth rebuilding or repair or upgrade.
It’s a keeper. Well engineered and built.
Happy trails to you.

I don't know what number she is but was documented in 1966 which I was told was the first year of production. I'd welcome any information you might remember.

Thanks for the comment. I wish I was as sturdy as this boat. There was an unforseen value in overbuilding these boats. Not that I wasn't annoyed by how thick the glass when I've had to drill it to make some change.

Re: 1966 Pearson Countess 44

Hi. Long time ago when survivability and gracefully designed yacht came off the drawing boards of experienced sailors.
First, the crews who built her were all very experienced. Pearson paid well. All the glass work was very carefully done. The small edges were laid up in fabric before any thicker material was used. Hand work. Very high glass to resin ratio.
I had worked in mold repair at O’Day and the molds at Pearson were flawless.
The hulls were not just thick but perfectly done. Everybody in the shop...every last person gathered to watch hull number one come out of the mold. Most were Portuguese and had built boats before joining Pearson. They truly took pride in their work. A lot had built wood boats or came from fishing families. Great bunch of boatbuilders.
Happy trails to the new owners.

The Countess 44 is a scaled down version of the Lady Helene which is about 50 foot.
Pearson built 58 or 59 of the Countesses. It was intended as a family cruiser with accomodations to please a family and still be able to sail well enough for the weekend racer. John Alden described her as a full powered sailboat, she will make hull speed under motor and is capable of powering into a strong head wind and current.
Under power she handles much like a displacement hull trawler and with a clean bottom is quite economical on fuel consumption.

And she sails very well.
