Hunter 460 wing keel

Hi, has any got caught and dried out with one of these wing keels. I am trying to find out what happens to the boat? Does rest precariously on the wings or lean over as a fin would on its side until the tide returns.

Thank you

Lead fin keels don’t know what brand boat to which they are attached. Not a problem unless you are sitting on rocks which might “dent” it.

I think it depends on a few things, namely what you come down to rest upon and the conditions that you're in when you're dried out, and how dried out you get.

I have a deep winged fin, and I caught a low spring tide that put me on a flat soft mud bottom and maxed out about 1ft below my water line. Luckily it was very calm, both in terms of wind and waves. I was at a pretty sturdy floating dock in Maine, and I was very slightly leaning into my fenders against the dock. This essentially put no more stress on my keel than being blocked up on the hard, actually probably much less.

I wouldn't like to be in that situation where there was a large rock under one side of the wing, or if there was a lot of wave or wind action moving the boat around a lot while it was on the wing.

Re: Hunter 460 wing keel

I once ha a shoal draft Cal-39 with a MASSIVE wing keel. I went aground on it once and the boat was standing on it. The wave were making the boat bounce on it and I watched the hull where it was bolted to flex each time.

I wouldn' even had planned to ground on purpose on that boat and feel it crazy of me to consider to do it on my Hunter.

Most, by far, boat are not designed to sit on their keels

Almost ALL boats (sailboats) sit on their keels (with the weight of the boat on the keel) during winter layup on the hard!
