Ericson 35 - Bluewater Cruiser ?

Any thoughts on an Ericson 35? Would you consider doing to serious ocean miles in one? Any insight would be great.

Read Storm Passage by Webb Chiles first. Ericson's vary greatly in design and build quality. I had a 29 for eighteen years that never showed any design or build flaws. A bridgedeck would have had to be added to make her oceanworthy in my opinion but people have crosed the Atlantic in everything short of a tennis shoe! Bruce King designed some wonderful Ericson's.

I have sailed offshore on an Erickson 35 on multiple occasions and find it to be a fine sailing vessel. I have encountered seas in excess of 12' with no difficulties, no handling problems of any sort, a smooth ride. The boat sails well on all points of sail. We never encountered any sailing problems while at sea.The only difficulty encountered on any offshore trip is that the salon table is not very well fastened to the deck and will not stay attached if used to brace oneself in a seaway.

I'm guessing you are familiar with the Ericson Yacht Owners website. If not, you'l find lots of help there. You can join the group without having made a purchase. Many do this in an effort to help them reach a decision.

Yes, boats like the Ericson 35 make good cruisers. You'll want to be "old fashioned" in your fitting-out and cargo-carrying. She won't be happy carrying the modern load of cruiser junk. Forget the radar arch, huge battery banks, RIB on deck, rail clutter .... you'll have cruising multihulls passing you (shameless troll). Think camping.

Which 35?
In 1965, the first Ericson 35 was a typical CCA cruising boat.
In 1969, the Ericson 35-2 was introduced,an up-to-date racer/cruiser, with swept-back moderate fin keel, pronounced bustle, and semi-balanced shallow spade rudder.
In 1982 it was replaced by the 35-3, a larger, more modern boat.

I think that Teddy Seymour became the first Black American to solo-circumnavigate in an early Erickson (Alberg) 35 (s/v “Love Song”).

Anyone ever cruised in one?

Many people have cruised them, especially up and down the coast; one limitation for ocean-crossing might be how much junk you can load on board since they're not super heavy boats with tons of storage. The classic Ericsons are narrow-beamed compared to some modern "harbor queen" designs, so that also somewhat limits space.

I don't know of sites specific to the 35s but EY.o Information Exchange - Powered by vBulletin is an owners' group hang-out for all Ericsons with frequent mentions of the 35s.
